How it works
It starts automatically when you finish signing up in the driver app.
- Finish signing up in the app.Your details, vehicle, documents and location.
- Look for an email from Checkr.Checkr is the background-check company we use. The email comes from Checkr, not from Cohotrip — check your spam folder if you don't see it. The link stays open for 7 days and Checkr sends reminders.
- Fill out Checkr's secure form.You'll review the disclosure, give your consent, and enter the details Checkr needs to find your records, such as your Social Security number, date of birth and driver's licence. You enter them on Checkr's site.
- Checkr runs the check.Most checks finish within a few business days. Some county court records take longer.
- You start driving once it comes back clearand your licence, registration and insurance are approved. We can't activate a driver account until the check is clear.

Every driver gets the same package.
- Identity and address historyA Social Security number trace, which also tells Checkr which counties to search.
- National criminal recordsA search of national criminal databases.
- County criminal recordsCourt records in the counties where you've lived, going back 7 years.
- Sex offender registriesA search of state and national registries.
- Global watchlistsGovernment sanctions and watchlists.
- Driving recordYour motor vehicle record from the state that issued your licence.
Your rights
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act
A background check is a consumer report, so federal law gives you these protections.
- Nothing runs without your permission. Checkr's form shows you the disclosure and asks for your written consent before any search starts.
- You can see your report. Checkr sends you a copy, and you can request one from Checkr at any time.
- You can dispute mistakes. If something in your report is inaccurate or incomplete, dispute it with Checkr. It's free, and Checkr has to investigate.
- You'll hear from us before a final decision. If something in your report might lead us not to activate your account, we'll send you a notice with a copy of the report and a summary of your rights, and give you time to respond or correct it first.
Why we do this
Riders get into a car with someone they've never met, sometimes for hours on a HopnTravel trip. Knowing that every driver has been checked is part of what makes that reasonable — for riders, and for the drivers who share the road with them.
